Have you ever noticed how many people think one reality show is totally ridiculous while being completely entranced by another. It’s kind of like going back to junior high school. “My reality show is better than your reality show,” is not an uncommon thing to hear today. If you watch any television at all, you’re probably hooked on at least one or two of them. And if you’re like most viewers, you are equally disgusted by some of the others.
Can any form of entertainment, however, be truly good or bad in the general sense of the word? Unless one watches nothing but Public Broadcasting, isn’t the idea to be entertained? To escape from the daily challenges of life, if only for sixty minutes or so? Then it’s hard to see how a show like “Fear Factor” where contestants eat disgusting things can be called bad if the viewers of that show find it entertaining. The “dog eat dog” competition on “The Apprentice” may turn some people off, but if others enjoy it, so be it!
But what about shows that some might consider denigrating? A certain percentage of the viewing audience may feel that “The Biggest Loser” is a horrible way to characterize people with eating disorders. Others with the same problem, however, may be encouraged by the success of the contestants. Others may just be happy for their conquering of a problem that they felt needed attention.
Then there are the lovers of classic television. Ahhhh, but for the good old days of “Leave It to Beaver” and “The Brady Bunch”! Well, there were a few reality shows back in the good old days. Remember “Candid Camera”? A show about catching people in confusing and embarrassing situations?
And let us not forget those who would argue that shows like “The Real World” are ruining the moral values of our youth by making their role models a bunch of drunken, over-sexed animals. That argument, of course, begs the question … “Who’s in charge of what teenagers watch at 9 or 10PM when such shows are on the air … the kids or the parents?” There are many young adults and others who find that series entertaining who have a right to watch what they want. This attitude also begs the question, “Which came first … the moral decline of society or unwholesome television programs?” Plus it’s rather unlikely that young people will stop getting drunk and having relations just because “The Real World” is off the air.
In the end, as long as these programs don’t break any laws, why not have as many as possible? After all, the number of available TV channels is already tremendous and there’s no sign of that number doing anything in the future but increasing. So if you only like one or two reality shows, it’s not like the others are taking up valuable channel space or anything.
If you hate all reality shows, choose from the multitude of other channels. There is some remarkably good programming on PBS, The Discovery Channel, the National Geographic Channel, Arts and Entertainment Television, and the list goes on. There are tons of Disney movies and TV shows from the 1960s to today on the Disney Channel, TV Land, and DVD!
I guess it all comes down to the fact that not everyone likes every type of entertainment. It’s important to remember, however, that the main purpose of entertainment is to provide an escape from the demands of our everyday lives. Something to take the “edge off” once in a while. If watching a reality show does that for you, then it has achieved its purpose. If not, watch something that does or find a completely different way to relax.

A few years back, prime time TV slots were dominated by the X-factor! – X-Files, X-Men Revolution and Xena-Warrior Princess. All the three shows have maintained high to medium ratings throughout their show period and still have dedicated fans who clamor for old episodes to be repeatedly telecast.

X-Files – A cult drama on science fiction, this TV show is a star in its own right. The show depicts how special FBI agents Mulder, Scully, Doggett and Reyes, uncover ugly truths about forces that are ready to harm the American civilization. What makes the show interesting is the pairing up of Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Though they are poles apart, they come together to investigate and solve mysteries related to paranormal events occurring in the country. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are exceptional actors who bring life into their acting. Winner of 5 Golden Globes and another 65 wins, this show can be considered as one that gave science fiction dramas a new lease of life.

X-Men Revolution – No one ever imagined that an animation series would capture audience’s imagination this way, as did X-Men. A two-time Emmy winner, this show is based on Marvel Comics Superhero team, the X-Men. Apart from Spider-man animated series, it has been touted as the longest running animation series on Kids WB. The specialty of this show lies in the fact that its characters are high-school kids learning to control their superpowers. This show can be called the best kid’s cult series of the last decade.

Xena – Warrior Princess – It is one of the best TV shows to portray women in strong willed characters, who want to use their power to save innocent people. Xena is a perfect mixture of action, adventure, comedy and fantasy. Lucy Lawless as Xena and Renee O’Connor as Gabriella have made audiences jump with excitement during the thrilling fight sequences. A primetime Emmy winner, this show was a super hit among all age groups.

The common link between all these TV shows is their ‘fantasy factor’. In spite of being made on science fiction and fantasy, they were able to deliver the essence of the story in an interesting and gripping manner. All these TV series are now available in DVD’s and on Internet.

Choose one of these shows for a night out and see how the X-factor takes complete control of you!

Sure, everybody watched a TV show about ghosts every now and then. In fact, it seems obligatory for every TV network to come up with its own supernatural themed programs. And many of them have turned out quite alike that you can’t tell them apart aside from their titles.

So what does Ghost Whisperer offer that has not yet been done on other TV shows? Luckily, there is still many. And the best thing about the show is, rather than doing the usual scare tactics that many shows of this type usually employ. This makes the show more interesting and engaging.

Ghost Whisperer centers around the life of Melinda Gordon, played by the stunning Jennifer Love Hewitt, who has the ability to see spirits. She works as a paranormal investigator to help the ghosts that contact her complete their unfulfilled missions. Each episode has Melinda solve the mystery surrounding a ghost’s present and help her cross to the afterlife. Each season also features an overarching story about how Melinda deals with her powers while trying to live a normal life. She also meets other people who show differing views about her abilities, some supporting her, while others shun her.

What makes the series great is that, as said above, instead of focusing on the scary aspects of the genre, it goes for the mystery surrounding the characters. Thus, instead of holding your pillow for cover, you would actually be glued to your screen, trying to figure out the nature of the spirits. You will also definitely tune in as the series progresses and more of Melinda’s background is revealed.

Another interesting aspect of the show is its philosophical view. Instead of simply portraying ghosts as malevolent and evil beings, the show present the topic in an entirely different manner, that of lost souls in need of help. This deviates from the more stereotypical ones seen in most TV series. This also adds more depth to the show as it allows more character build up than what is usually seen. Also, instead of being to preachy about heaven and everything, the series’ view on the topic of heaven is more realistic and enlightening to viewers, which add to the show’s over-all message.

Hewitt also gives a top notch performance in her portrayal of the character of Melinda. She convincingly presents Melinda’s troubles and views about her abilities. She also definitely deserves a thumbs up in her good acting, which adds more to the appeal of the character.

And since this is a series about ghosts, there should be some. The series’ visual; and special effects are truly awesome, such that the scenes will definitely give you the scare of your life. This aspect definitely completes the series and make it more than worthwhile as a good evening watch.
